It is a known fact that the use of neti pots is one easy, natural way to help overcome the sinus problems. But one should remember that anything including nasal irrigation should not be overdone.

Neti Pot

Dr.Talal M.Nsouli, of Watergate Allergy and Asthma Centre, and his colleagues have conducted a research on the effect of the overuse of a neti pot. The explanation they put forth for overusing neti is follows:

Mucous consists of antimicrobial agents that are antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral in nature. One such agent is known as lactoferrin that stimulates our immune system. It is very effective against various types of viruses that cause infections including the ones that cause cold, such as rhinovirus. It is also effective against the HIV virus. When one performs nasal saline irrigation, the mucuous and the defense mechanism get washed away. So the participants in the study were asked to stop the nasal irrigation for a while and it was surprising to see how much better they felt quickly for the restoration time for the nasal passage to come back to its natural state is about two to six weeks.

There was a 62 percent decrease in the frequency of acute rhinosinusitis after they stopped using the neti pot regularly. He said that the nasal irrigation is good when it is done three to four times a week. But when done regularly, he and his colleagues observed that it interfered with the immunological biochemistry of the nose. This could result in reduction of immune elements thus leading to returning sinus infections. Their team felt that this could become a vicious cycle with more nasal irrigation, more infection and hence more nasal irrigation. They emphasized on cutting this cycle.

But at the same time, the research team does not advise against the neti pots. From their research, they derive that nasal irrigation might not be very useful if it is done day to day on regular basis. According to them, the good mucous, that contains antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents, might be depleted by the overuse of neti pots.

There have been opinions that the over usage of a neti pot can sometimes cause inflammation that could cause more and more production of mucous.

Steps to avoid danger of Neti Pot Treatment

  1. Ensure to clean your hands and arm with soap before cleaning the pot.Nasal Rinse
  2. Rinse the neti pot with hot water and flush out the spout.
  3. Cleaning with soapy water once a month or every three months
  4. Completely dry air the pot.
  5. In case of any cracks in the neti pot dispose it immediately.
  6. Do not share your neti pot with anyone.
  7. Ensure to use always distilled water or boiled water for the solution.
  8. Saline solution should be of about 3 to 5 month supply
  9. Discard any unused saline solution in the neti pot. Remember leftover solution is great space for amoeba, bacterial and viral growth.

Finally always remember to follow the directions stated, boil your tap water or use the distilled water for solution and forever keep the neti device clean.

So it is advised to use neti pots two to three times a week. Of course, finally it is always better to consult your physician if the infection persists.
